Yes!! You wanna meet up today? Or do you have some other phone calls you're trying to make? You don't ever call me just to talk.

[sotenbori]

Sure, we can go today if that's what ya want. I don't have any other calls ta make.

[buncho]

I'm at home! I'll grab my shoes and you can pick me up in five minutes!

[sotenbori]

Damn, always ready when opportunity knocks, huh? Fine, I'll be there soon.

[buncho]

[ Mafuyu laughs ]

No reason to wait when you can do stuff now, right? See ya!

[ Regardless of whether it takes five minutes or fifteen, Mafuyu will be outside whenever he gets there, in the middle of play-wrestling her dog who had heard her say "corndogs" and wants to come with. ]

[ we'll split the difference and say it's like ten minutes - majima shows up with his beautiful pristine car not totally thrilled about the idea the dog might come too but also he can't possibly turn down a dog so i guess the dog is invited. ]

[ The dog can't do any more damage than Mafuyu herself can, so he's coming along too, squeezing past Mafuyu's legs when she opens up the passenger side door and her climbing in after him, drawing her legs up to her chest so she can perch awkwardly in the seat while the dog gets her leg space. ]

I'm ready, I'm ready! Where do you wanna go? There's the food court at the mall, and I think the pier has some too!

Uh, wherever you want, I guess.

[although... ]

Pier might be better if the dog is coming, too.

[buncho]

[ The dog barks loudly over whatever Mafuyu's trying to say, and she has to shout ] PIER IS GOOD!! [ over the din just to be heard; competing with her dog might be why shy's so loud in the first place. Also her fearlessness in her taking her hands to clamp over her dog's muzzle so he can shut up for a second. ]

Who were you calling when you tried to call me? Kaz?

[ she's a brave soul ]

Ah, no. I was tryin' ta call my brother. The one in jail.

[buncho]

[ She remembers him mentioning him once, and immediately gets her phone out of her pocket. ]

I want to talk to him too! What's his number? I'll put him on speaker!

[sotenbori]

It's no use. I've tried callin' him a fuckton of times, but it doesn't connect.

[buncho]

Have you tried calling the operator and asking them to connect you?

[ Is that how a phone operator works, she doesn't know ]

I don't think it'd help - something's goin' weird with fuckin' Retrospec again. It's alright, we'll have a good time at the pier.

[buncho]

[ She doesn't quite believe that about Retrospec, but then again, she doesn't have anybody outside of Recollé that she's ever had to call or want to visit, so she settles back in her seat. ]

...Okay. Can we still go visit him later? I bet the police could take us right there without Retrospec getting in the way.

Honestly, it's probably better just to forget about it.

Are you guys fighting?

[sotenbori]

No. We're not fighting.

[buncho]

You're not giving up on him?

[ majimas quiet for a long moment. "focusing on driving" as adults do. ultimately, he decides not to treat her like a child but to voice his actually feelings: ]

[ With a pause that long, she was expecting a yes or a no, ready to chew him out either way, so hearing that giver her pause as well. ]

Who?

[sotenbori]

He was like my brother, but he wasn't my brother. His name was Saejima.

[ he says it like he's still getting used to the sound. sa-e-ji-ma. ]

In my memories, sometimes... people would make these promises to each other. Really big promises, like, "I promise to be with you until we die." "I promise to always take care of you." And someone you made that promise to, they were your kyoudai. Saejima was mine.

Huh... Sounds like something you'd say to Kaz. Or me and Chiyo and Yaboku.

[ Like family, right? She understands that sort of connection, although more in an "I would kill for you" sort of way than just passively being there for one another. ]
